Ngày Công tác thiện nguyện cho Kids Against Hunger

Volunteer Day for Kids Against Hunger

On June 3rd, 2017, the Community of the Compassion Meditation Center, members of the Maryknoll Mission Education, and the employees of the Charity Organization Kids Against Hunger, with a total of about one hundred people have gathered at the Compassion Meditation Center to pack dried vegetarian nutritious foods to be sent to help poor children in Africa.

From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, a volunteer took up one of three duties:

  1. Filling the plastic bags with food: every volunteer picked up a foam cup and filled the cup with rice, dried and diced vegetables, vitamin powder, and soy products in the same order as listed. The content of the cup would then be poured into the plastic bag.
  2. Weighing: the volunteer with the duty would take a filled bag and weigh it. If the weight of the bag had to weigh between 490-496 grams. If the weight was not within this range, then the volunteer would take some of the content out or put some in to make sure that the weight was within range.
  3. Sealing: the volunteer would take the weighed bag and use the sealing equipment brought in by Kids Against Hunger to seal it. The sealed bag would then put the sticker of the product on and place it into boxes for transportation to Africa in the next 3 weeks.

Of all three duties, the weighing one is the most important because if the weight of the whole box is incorrect, the entire box would be deemed as not compliant and would not be accepted for transportation. The volunteers who took up the filling duty would also have to be very careful, as placing too much vitamin powder into the bags would cause the people who eat the food to be sick.

At completion, the volunteers and Kids Against Hunger managed to package 12,997 plastic bags. Everyone worked in harmony and happiness, and many have shared that they would like to come back for this meaningful and beneficial volunteer work.

The Community of the Compassion Meditation Center has donated $2000 for Kids Against Hunger. This donation is equivalent to 10,000 food bags. Each packed bag is enough to serve a family of six people.

The Kids Against Hunger Organization is currently providing food and assistance to poor children and their families in over sixty countries all over the world like Haiti, India, Philippines and the United States. If anyone who like to make a donation to Kids Against Hunger or do volunteer work for the organization can sign up at their website Kids Against Hunger
